True Breakouts vs Fakeouts

Most losses in pattern trading come from false breakouts. Some commonly used filters:

When a pattern breakout does not hold. Watch where price closes relative to the edge of the chosen area.

  • A close, not a touch. Wait for a candle to close beyond the level on the reference timeframe.
  • Momentum. The breakout candle has a decisive body; a breakout with a tiny body and a long wick is suspicious.
  • Trend context. Breakouts in the direction of the bigger trend deserve more trust than those against it.
  • Retest. Entering when price comes back to test the newly broken level often carries less risk than chasing.
  • Timing. Breakouts during thin liquidity or right before news are prone to failure.

If you get caught in a fakeout

Respect your stop. A false break that returns into the pattern often continues sharply in the opposite direction — do not hope, exit according to plan.

Key points

  • Patiently waiting for a close + retest filters out many traps.
  • A respected stop turns a fakeout from a disaster into an ordinary small loss.
